Wild Yam

Wild Yam Extract    Wild yam is a plant. It contains a chemical, diosgenin, which can be made in the laboratory into various steroids, such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The root and the bulb of the plant are used as a source of diosgenin, which is prepared as an “extract,” a liquid that contains concentrated diosgenin. There are over 600 species of wild yam. Some species are grown specifically as a source of diosgenin for laboratories to use in making steroids. These species are generally not eaten due to a bitter flavor. Only about 12 of the 600 species are considered edible. Wild yam can rebalance a man’s hormones, according to noted herbalist and author James Green in his book “The Male Herbal: The Definitive Health Care Book for Men and Boys.” He says that is because wild yam can assist in   the body’s hormone-building process. It also may be especially helpful for men as they go through hormonal changes later in life, particularly when it comes to mood and energy. As an antispasmotic – Another benefit is its antispasmotic or soothing properties, according to Dr. Paul Barney in the “Doctor’s Guide to Natural Medicine.” It is soothing to the muscles and can calm the nerves as well. Especially for men who are under lots of stress, wild yam may be beneficial as they age, helping to protect the heart, the most important muscle of all.  Digestion – A man’s digestion also may be improved by taking wild yam. It eases digestion, according to Dr. James Balch in “Prescription for Natural Cures,” having a calming effect on the bile duct. Increasing bile flow leads to a better break down of food, particularly fats. The fact that wild yam stimulates blood vessels also may help with better digestion, since gastrointestinal blood flow is necessary to move food through and out of the body. Blood Sugar – Wild yam also may be helpful in stabilizing blood sugar levels in men. Alternative health expert and former Prevention Magazine Health Books Editor Bill Gottlieb recommends taking wild yam every day if you suffer from Type 2 diabetes to bring blood sugar levels to a normal range. He says that it is safe to take wild yam everyday even once blood sugar has stabilized. Check with your doctor before consuming wild yam if you are taking insulin. Read more
